Abstract

The aim of this paper is to propose to read Oisyme instead of Stryme in a pas-sage of Heraclides Ponticus on the basis of (a) information from Herodotus and Apollodorus, son of Pasion, about the location of Stryme in the vicinity of Maroneia and to the east of the Nestos River, (b) the mention of Galepsus together with Oisyme by Thucydides, Anti-phon, pseudo-Scylax and Diodorus, and (c) the location of both Galepsus and Oisyme be-tween the Strymon and the Nestus Rivers. Heraclides describes Oisyme as a nesos. This can be explained in one of two ways. One possibility is that the word nesos may mean «peninsu-la» as it showed in several other cases (Bouthrotos, Amarynthos, Achradine, Taurike), which is appropriate because Oisyme is located on a peninsula. Another possibility is that the word nesos is an intrusive gloss inserted to explain why the name is found in a book about islands even though this was not necessary because the entry deals with the colonies of the island Thasos.
