Aim and Scope

PHILIA: International Journal of Ancient Mediterranean Studies is a peer-reviewed academic journal that provides an international platform for original research on the ancient Mediterranean world. The journal publishes studies grounded in primary source material across fields such as epigraphy, papyrology, numismatics, historical geography, archaeology, prosopography, and social, economic, political, administrative, military, and religious history. By encouraging critical and philological approaches to various aspects of ancient Mediterranean cultures, the journal seeks to offer new perspectives on the ancient past of the Mediterranean basin.

The scope of PHILIA encompasses research focusing on the Mediterranean basin and neighbouring regions from the first millennium BC to the end of Late Antiquity. The journal prioritises studies that analyse and contextualise epigraphic, papyrological, numismatic, and philological evidence. This core axis is complemented by analytical investigations into the topography and administrative structures of ancient settlements, trade routes, religious cults, stone-cutting traditions, and material culture.

We do not consider contributions outside these disciplinary boundaries and methodological frameworks for publication.
